Created in September 1984 by the National Council for Educational Technology, NIVC acted as a focus for developing and disseminating educational applications of video disc technology.

When the National Interactive Video Centre closed in 199?, Julia Duckworth, who headed the centre, invited Stephen Heppell and Richard Millwood to collect what could be saved from disposal. A white van was dispatched from Essex and two large cabinets of video discs, players and other material was saved and forms this collection.
