Ultralab's vision of learning and technology

Ultralab's mission statement is:

"To research, apply and disseminate the benefits of new technologies, seeking to develop an empowering, creative and delightful learning environment that knows no boundaries."

This is based on a belief that humankind can be viewed as embodying a 'culture of tools'. This culture of tools refers to the creative activity pursued by humankind to use and make tools in order to enhance productivity and capability for the purposes of survival.

If this thesis is accepted, then it is proposed that the information and communications technologies (ICTs), provide us with one of the most sophisticated tools and tool-making environments since the first flint was shaped in the stone age.

Thus an important aspect of Ultralab's vision is that that the widest possible creative participation in the use of ICTs to enhance learning is beneficial.

Moreover, Ultralab does not see learning as an individual act alone, but interpersonal in nature and social in context. This has lead us to believe that the 'community' of learners is a vital concept and we continue to develop technology which can support strong community and sub-community in the pursuit of effective learning.

Finally, Ultralab believes that delightful learning is both attainable and an entitlement, and we envisage technology applied to the serious business of learning which delights learners both aesthetically and socially.
