Neil Boughen's Profile

Neil Boughen's Profile Description
Neil Boughen discovered Ultralab as a student on a Trident work experience placement in 1998, he then worked at Ultralab part time whilst studying Information Communication Technology (ICT) at Chelmsford college, in 2001 Neil joined the team full time as a Systems Administrator, his job role quickly changed into Technical Support Officer.

Neils job involves supporting 20 lab based staff and 21 remotely based staff. Over the past 4 years Neil has experimented with different types of communication technology.  This has helped the lab gain a greater knowledge in the support of remote working.  Neil has a wide area of knowledge in Macintosh and PC desktop support and has recently become more involved in network and server maintenance and the provision of wireless networking.

Neil has carried out a fair amount of action research as befits someone working in a technology research environment. One of his main contributions has been in the creation and setup of a streaming media facility. This has partially replaced Ultralab's reliance on ISDN video conferencing but also has provided Ultralab with a world leading model for telepresence at our regular team meetings.  The technology is now being used widely throughout Ultralab and has been used in a wide range of different projects to provide responsive, real-time remote video broadcasting on low bandwidth.

Neil has been involved in quite a few projects during his time here, very early on he helped with the Talking Heads project and in more recent times has been involved in Summerschool, Executive Learning Work Group (with Oracle), Everyobject Tells a Story (with Channel 4, Culture Online and the V&A Museum) and ULTRALAB TV.
