Summerschool (2003-2004)

by Martin Doherty last modified Friday Oct 6, 2006 11:29

Just a little interesting digital movie research something to brighten the day!

Ultralab's Summerschool Programme is well established and  reported in detail throughout the Ultralab site but I really got interested in how these techniques could be applied to the thorny problem of community relations in Northern Ireland. The basic format of the summerschool in 2003 was that the researchers visited Ultralab, were introduced to the technology and the techniques, planned their movies and went away to work with their teachers. They returned in September to work at Ultralab again on the final editing process and then to showcase their work at a public event. With all the work stored on CD/DVD and distributed worldwide it is, at the very least,  a marvellous celebration of young people's creativity!

Drawing on the summerschool lessons and techniques I, and my colleague Anthony Russell, adapted the model to be operated over only three days and outside the control of schools. We chose community groups operating along the sectarian divide in Belfast to test the model and assess its potential as a tool for tackling commmunity barriers. The Belfast Summerschool(2003) was highly successful and the researchers' work appeared on the 2003 Summerschool DVD. We repeated the exercise in Derry in 2004 to further test the model. This same model has been successfully deployed in other contexts since that time. Most encouragingly of all the Belfast groups continued to work together after the event and have used their movies to promote their work.

The Derry Case Study will form part of an up and coming publication drawing together the lessons we learned about digital story telling with groups across the world.
