Alice Mitchell's Profile

Alice has worked in education, government and industry sectors in Australia, Austria, Germany and the UK. As language teacher, manager, project leader and new media pedagogue, she has developed a strong and enduring interest in vocational education, learner choice and diversity and in technology-enhanced learning. The range and depth of her experience and expertise is relevant to the innovation, design, delivery and quality assurance of flexible and viable multimedia solutions for e-learning and business training. Such solutions are standards-based, take into account different learning styles and incorporate interactive, participative and communicative approaches to learning. They include use of social technologies, web-based simulations and mobile learning games.

Alice joined the University in 1991, initially to set up and run a Language Centre on Central Campus. Here she continued to build on her strong track record in teaching, management, innovative design and delivery of curriculum and in significant and sustained income generation.

Recruited by Ultralab in1995 as Editor of the Apple European Education website, she quickly instigated and led a variety of initiatives for which she had obtained substantial funding. These include innovative and successful projects on:

• curriculum development – in collaboration with Richard Millwood, the design and development of Ultra-language-lab for BT's AngliaCampus;
• inclusion – Ultralab’s action research in the EU-funded, pan-European project m-Learning (www.m-learning.org/);
• work-based, online learning – the design and development of Ultra-learning-lab for the University’s Department of Health Care Practice;
• e-assessment – online materials and research for the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry ELSA examinations; research-based report for the Scottish Qualifications Authority.

Alice currently leads Ultralab’s action research in the pan-European project mG-BL (mobile Games-Based Learning), which is funded by the EU under 6th Framework, Priority 2, IST (see www.mg-bl.com/). She has responsibility for project resourcing and budget management. Her leadership role includes conceptualising, strategising and detailed planning as well as day-to-day management and advising on the research-related and practical issues faced by a multi-disciplinary and geographically-distributed project team. As befits the leader of an action research project, her style is collaborative and hands-on.

Alice is contributing to Ultralab’s international reputation at the cutting edge of the new field of m-learning, in demand as researcher, consultant, curriculum developer and conference speaker, delivering presentations and keynotes at national and international level. The photo shows Alice talking to a film crew from Swedish Educational TV (Ur) at Ultralab, where they were making a feature on our innovations in the m-learning field. She subsequently keynoted in Stockholm at Ur's conference for teachers: 'Zappa, knappa, chatta' (zap, click, chat).

Her publications cover a wide spectrum and include books, multi-media learning packages, academic papers and research reports. A recent literature review on the use of computer and video games for learning has attracted a readership of over 250,000 since its publication in October 2004.
