Andy Smart

I'm the network manager for a secondary school in Gloucestershire, and a former teacher. My day to day exisitence is putting IT in front of students so they can learn. Unlike a business, a school has only the progress of it's students as an end product, and that is sometimes misunderstood. A business has tangible things which are visibly undelivered if IT fails, in a school there is only knowledge transfer. What is also forgotten is that once time has been lost it can never be put back, once that 30 minute downtime has lost a lesson every future moment of the student time is accounted for and the lesson can only happen in the future by removing some other learning to make room for it.

So new models of delivery content are valuable, they can not only engage the students in new and exciting ways but may bring a way for students who have lost didactic time to make up the learning they've lost. Through out-of-school-hours learning or self study perhaps.

I really like to see imaginative use of IT in the classroom, and I like teachers to come and tell me what they'd like to be able to do in a blue sky world and then let me try to make it happen.

I'm also passionate about Bats and Tai Chi..
